How To Ski Bumps
Skiing Bumps
Photo: Jonathan Selkowitz

A. Set up for success
Look ahead to the next mogul. This one is long and round, and the spine runs straight down the slope. Get your skis into the fall line, steer them into the trough and let them run parallel to the bump’s spine.

B. Look for clues
The trough could be short, wide, narrow, deep or shallow. Its size, shape and depth give you clues about how fast or slow to steer your skis. Expect to pick up speed in the fall line.

C. Suck it up
As you approach a crest, flex your legs to keep your skis in contact with the snow. Plant your pole and flatten your skis on top of the crest, then steer them into the next trough.

D. Extend and go
Think about keeping your head at a consistent level as you extend your legs and push your skis down the back of the bump. Your legs, not your upper body, should absorb the moguls.
