The Last Plateau: Smooth and Steady (Skiing)
Up-Unweighting
Photo: Jonathan Selkowitz

Initiating a turn by up-unweighting—standing up to release your old edges—works on shallow pitches with smooth snow because you have time and space to draw out your turns. And as long as the snow surface remains relatively consistent, your skis stay put while your body moves up and down. You can stand up tall to release your old edges, plant your pole at your most extended point, redirect your skis, then flex your joints to engage your new edges.
