Next Year's Gear: A Sneak Peek at 2011's Skis and Boots
2011 Tecnica Phoenix 100 Airshell
Tecnica’s new Airshell technology, available in next year’s Phoenix line, promises the ultimate customization to any shape of foot. Just step in and pump it up. Its special bladder fills with air where you need it to fill up voids between your foot and the shell. The result, Tecnica says, is the kind of precision fit once reserved for owners of costly foam-injected custom liners. The snugger foot-hold yields more precise control and comfort—not to mention a little extra insulation. Actually, the concept has been tried before, but with decidedly mushy results. Tecnica, however, says that by putting the air bladder next to the shell—instead of between the walls of the liner—the fit tension is more accurate. The two large pump buttons at the top of the spoiler control different zones: there’s one for the forefoot, one for the heel area. The two smaller buttons below them let the air out when you’re ready to de-boot for apres.
