Not So Fresh: Mountain Resorts Gone Wild
ONE HORSEPOWER

Any celebration of winter that’s organized into Horse Events and Non-Horse Events has to be authentic. That’s certainly the case with Steamboat Springs’ annual Winter Carnival, one of the oldest winter carnivals in the U.S. With equine-powered street slaloms, shovel races and skijoring competitions (shown), local ranch horses earn their oats. More modern diversions include the Lighted Man, who skis while wearing a 70-pound fireproof suit that launches 32 Roman candles, 12 skyrockets and more than a few puzzled looks. Town elders started the event in 1914 to help snowbound residents cope with cabin fever. Mission accomplished.
