Summer Hiking in the Mountains
Squaw Valley USA's Shirley Canyon

This hike takes you from High Camp to Shirley Lake and then down Shirley Canyon. You can take the Shirley Lake trail—a dirt road—or the Solitude trail, which is narrower, from the top. The trails meet at Shirley Lake, where you can decide to finish the 4-mile-long hike through the canyon or turn back and head to the cable car where they can ride down.  If you’re looking for a full day trip, you can hike all the way up and down the trail, eight miles total, with no assistance from the cable car. Dogs are welcome on both the trail and the cable car, and hikers can get a discounted cable car ride if you choose to only take it down. This scenic hike takes visitors past waterfalls, wildflowers, and you can often spot yellow-bellied marmots in the summer. Hikers can explore the area year-round, but it’s most convenient while the cable car is running, from June through mid-September.
