Turning Points: Skiing Slantways
Plane and Simple
Photo: Lucas Gilman

In high school physics, we learned about three-dimensional space, and we generally think of our movements as happening within one of three planes—fore/aft, up/down and side/side. But we rarely move in a single plane while skiing. When we combine fore/aft movements with lateral movements, we move diagonally, which allows us to edge, pressure and steer our skis with power and precision.
