Roughing it is not on the itinerary at this Relais & Chateaux property just north of Steamboat. With six rooms in the main lodge and eight cabins, the ranch offers a more intimate experience than Devil’s Thumb—but it’s no less Western. The lodge’s fireplace, surrounded by plush leather sofas, is the first stop for an après-ski drink after returning from Steamboat’s slopes, 45 minutes away. (The lodge runs a complimentary shuttle and will even pack you a lunch for the day.) But the dining is the star here. Three meals a day are served family-style. Expect a four-course dinner nightly with entrees such as venison sirloin with sweet potatoes. Also on tap: sleigh rides, nordic skiing on 24 groomed kilometers and horseback rides.
Rates: $450 per night for a lodge room; $560–$1,445 per night for a cabin; includes three meals a day, airport and mountain shuttles, and nordic equipment
