Dupont buys into Outlast

posted: 01/01/2000

Boulder -- Outlast Technologies, which sells temperature-stabilizing fabrics for sportswear and bedding, has signed an alliance with Dupont Textiles & Interiors (DTI), the largest textile and fiber business in the world.

Under the agreement, Dupont has bought an equity stake in Outlast. The amount of that investment is not disclosed.

According to a press release, the alliance will extend DTIs position in the high performance arena. New products designed by the two companies will be marketed within the portfolio of DTI brands (Lycra, Coolmax, Supplex, Cordura, etc.), with applications in sportswear, footwear, bedding, health care and everyday wear.

Brad Poorman, Outlast's VP/North America, said the alliance will accelerate new product introductions. "You'll see some new combinations of existing technologies early next year," he said, "and some all-new applications within two years."

In the short term, sportswear manufacturers may expect to be offered combinations like Lycra or Coolmax with Outlast.Outlast CEO George Cattermole, himself a 30-year veteran of Dupont, noted that Outlast should move into profitability within the first quarter of 2003. The company has been in product development mode since it was founded in 1991 to market phase change temperature-stabilizing materials originally developed for NASA space suits.

Snowsport brands using Outlast fabrics currently include Burton, Columbia, Gates, Marmot, Obermeyer, and The North Face. Footwear brands include Burton, Nordica, Red Wing and Teva.

DTI sells textiles, fibers and interior materials (flooring, for instance) in 50 countries, and has annual revenues around $6.5 billion.
