Winter Park, CO: K2 Mod X Demo

posted: 01/01/2000

Winter Park, CO, Jan. 9, 2000--Having raced on K2 skis with blinking lights for as long as I can remember, I thought I might try out K2's newest Mod system. I come from a racing background and enjoy skiing aggressive medium radius turns on a variety of terrain. For comparison's sake, I'm 6'1" and 175 pounds. (I also enjoy moonlit sled rides and long walks on the beach, if you're interested.)

The K2 Mod system is supposed to increase stability and reduce chatter, both necessities when skiing on hard snow and ice. The Mod X accomplishes these tasks well on relatively firm ground. However, the demanding freerider these days doesn't stick to groomers so how did the Mod X handle for me in powder and moguls?

I skied on 181-cm length skis in new snow conditions for a day at Winter Park Ski Resort, CO. In moguls, the Mod X was responsive, but not quite soft enough to hold a line for more than 25 turns before the ski decided it would rather rocket over bumps than hit the troughs between them. That said, I found it to be a well-made ski that made my ski day a lot of fun.
