Apache Xplorer (2009)
Remember the original Xplorer-the first ski to combine a midfat waist with modern sidecut? It's worth commemorating. The new Xplorer is wider, but same idea: Float meets carve in a versatile package. Metal gives it heft, but wood-core cap construction keeps it from being exhausting. Kudos to K2 for offering it flat ($875), but the extra-wide MX12.0 binding gives it edge-power belying its width. "Balanced and easy to negotiate, with a big sweet spot," said Hogen.
