Atomic Hawx 130 (2014)
This boot comfortably fits almost every foot type and impressed all our testers with an inviting and warm initial fit. Once on snow, the Hawx soared. Smooth and bred to shred pow, testers said. It's not overly aggressive to the edge-agile enough and solid at speed. This year's flagship boasts a strong 130 flex that will stand up to big, tall guys and aggressive skiers who may have squashed the 120 in the past. Its flex is one of the longest and smoothest of all, with a tall and full-feeling tongue to deliver even pressure to the ski's shovel. As with all Hawx models, the forefoot "iflex" zones enable the boot to bend slightly under the ball of foot so that the flexed shape of the foot and the bent arc of the ski are matched in a subtly round feeling turn. Atomic's top end T3 liner has been improved here with a new foam layer that resists pack-out and retains a still-new pillow feel against the foot even after the liner has set to the skier's foot shape. Its fit is contained enough as a medium width for quick moves but with enough forefoot and toe room for extended sessions in the trees on cold, blower days. The Hawx stance is fairly upright and the cuff and tongue are on the tall side. Some of our shorter, lighter guys said they might opt for the more malleable 120. Dual cuff adjusters and a fat and functional power strap are key features. Several testers mentioned that the Hawx excels off-piste with turn-to-turn predictability that opened up options in all terrain. Tester Comments: "Easy to ski. The new liner has a much better fit over the top of the foot than before. " "A sweet blend of comfort and upper end skiability. Great anatomical fit."
