VITALS Silcox Hut is open to groups year-round. Sunday through Thursday, groups of 12 or more are required. On weekends, groups of 16 or more are required. Maximum capacity is 24 guests. Overnights include breakfast and dinner and transportation to and from the hut.
HOW IT WORKS Guests check their baggage in a locker at Timberline Lodge by 3:30 p.m. for transport to the hut. They can ride the lift, hike or take a transport vehicle to Silcox at around 4 p.m.
COST $90 per night per person if guests bring their own sleeping bags, or $100 per night with bedding provided. Call 503-219-3192.
GETTING THERE Silcox Hut is accessed from Timberline Lodge. Timberline Lodge is located at 6,000 feet on Mt. Hood, 60 miles east of Portland, Ore., on Highway 26.
CLIMBING MT. HOOD From Silcox the technical climb takes about four to five hours, if you're fit. The Palmer lift gives a nearly 7,000-foot boost, as does an optional cat ride from either Timberline or Silcox. For more information on climbing or for condition updates, call Timberline Guides at 541-312-9242 or visit
DINING Whether or not you stay a night at Timberline Lodge, catch a meal in the Cascade Dining Room or grab a drink upstairs in the Ram's Head Bar. Settle in by the windows for a backdrop of the Cascade Range.
FOR A CLOSER LOOK At times during the winter season, the Overlook Room of Silcox serves lunch and drinks to day skiers. For reservations at Silcox, call 503-219-3192. For Timberline Lodge, call 800-547-1406.
