PRO: It's often the case with boots that the simplest designs are the most successful. The Pro Z is Zen-like in its spareness and lack of frills. But it nails the fundamentals-accurate fit, smooth flex, efficient stance and solid support-and the resulting performance will please experts. The Z is based on Dolomite's race boot. It gets a roomier fit (a still-exacting 98 mm at the forefoot) and a softer flex (that's still quite stiff) and is made of the same resilient polyether (which is unfazed by temperature changes). The hardware is effective and rugged, the liner is top-quality without being over-plush, and the Z's heart is as big as the Dolomites themselves. "I could make aggressive turns at low or high speeds," says Laundon. "It really lets you work the ski." CON: Very difficult to put on; even harder to take off.
