K2 Remedy 102 (2014)
K2 has streamlined its collection and separated its freeride skis into two categories: directional - traditional chargers - and bi-directional - smeary twin-tips. The Remedy 102 (formerly known as the MissBehaved) fits into the latter group, with a tail that's almost as wide as the tip, lending it a loose, playful feel and earning it No. 1 in Forgiveness - quite a feat for the group's widest ski. That said, just because it's fun and easy doesn't mean it lacks substance. It charges but is still content to let you do the driving. Gibbons: "What a blast. No effort, and it performed."
The Remedy 102 is the only Women's Freeride collection ski with K2's jibby bi-directional sidecut. The waist and mounting position are moved further forward, and the tail is only a little narrower than the tip. That's designed to give it a looser, "slashier" feel in deep snow than the SuperBright 102, though they share the same width. And for those inclined, it's optimized for switch (backwards) performance. It's only sold flat (no binding). K2 splits its women's Freeride collection into two categories, the "directional" SuperBrights (90 and 102 mm) and the "bi-directional" Remedy models (102 and 117). The SuperBrights are the more conventional, built to charge the fall line in powder, rather than play with it, and to perform well in hardpack conditions between storms, with reliable carvability. The more powder-specific Remedies embrace a more modern powder skiing style, with slashy tapered tips and turned up tails for a looser, surfier feel in deep snow. All models are likely candidates for backcountry skiing with AT bindings, and all are designed for compatibility with K2 climbing skins. The Remedy 102 is a metal-free, fiberglass-reinforced, wood-core women's-specific K2 Bioflex3 construction, with aspen underfoot (80 percent) for strength and responsiveness and paulownia (20 percent) tip and tail for softer flex and reduced swing weight. HybriTech Sidewall construction combines a sturdy vertical sidewall underfoot for edge grip, lightweight cap fore and aft for supple flex. K2's All-Terrain Rocker combines 70 percent camber with 30 percent tip/shovel rocker to smooth the ride, enhance forgiveness and improve soft-snow flotation. K2's tapered Powder Tip design further helps to keep it loose and maneuverable in deep snow. The pink ribbon on the base signifies K2's support (at least $50,000 annually) for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
