Pro Last year, a similar Nordica (the Nitrous) poached a medal in Free XL against much wider skis at Snowbird, so we knew it worked in powder. But on Beaver Creek slopes offering spring crud and groomers both soft and hard, it came into its own as an all-mountain freerider. Stability and edge-grip are hallmarks of this wood-core, metal-reinforced layup. Testers could almost forget it was 78 mm wide. But it pleased them most with energetic rebound that most long/fast carvers lack. Load it up, and enjoy the powerful release. But it’s power by degrees: Relax or get after it—the Hot Rod is content either way. Shaw marveled at its "perfect combination of power, edge-hold and stability mixed with fun and easy turning." Con A common flaw in skis this wide: It’s ponderous in bumps.
