Nordica Speed Machine 14 (2006)
Rarely does a new design vault to the upper echelons in its first year, but the Speedmachine does, with performance comparable to the Dobermann/Hot Rod series in a roomier fit and softer flex. The Speedmachine (100 mm at the forefoot) shares the asymmetrical hinge points (higher on the inside, like your ankle) that give the Dobermann and Hot Rod boots their uncanny edge-feel. But it's made using two types of plastic: hard material in the key power-transmission zones and soft stuff everywhere else, for comfortable, accurate wrapping of the foot. "For comfort and ease with good performance, this one's a winner," says Hogen.
