Salomon Origins Topaz (2009)
Quick and responsive are not always good qualities in this category: If a ski reacts to bad input as well as good, you'll find yourself on your face. But the Topaz manages to be light and turny yet stable and balanced, too, prompting comments as varied as, "friendly," "aggressive," "carves" and "floats." It's not for those who fly on autopilot, however: The Topaz requires some skill. "No serve-'em-up arcs," said Thys, "but easy livin' through the whole turn."

Not For
Newbies still learning to carve
