Pro Perhaps no manufacturer knows how to lighten up better than Salomon. The Sandstorm gets a feather-light core of high-density foam, milled to fit beneath its cap construction. Result: a ski that testers rated the most nimble in the category. It bested all in Short Turns and, like the Fury (see Free XL), was tops in Forgiveness, too. Testers loved its airy quickness and ease. The Sandstorm (also sold flat; $830) employs Salomon’s new Smartrak plate, designed to maximize edge-grip on wide skis and to smooth the ride with shock-absorption. Ramp-angle is thoughtfully built into the plate, not the binding, so it’s the same no matter how long or short your boot is. Howard had one worry: "Just too easy to turn. What about your manhood?" Con Big gap in the size run between 173 cm and 187 cm.
