CLEAN UP
It may seem strange that the first step to good waxing is to clean off existing wax, but it's paramount. Any dust—or worse, metal shavings from a recent sharpening—can gunk things up. Vacuum your workbench, wash your hands, and fasten the ski in the vise (base up). Run a sharp scraper tip to tail down the length of the base to scrape off old wax, which is often noticeably discolored by dirt, pollen, soot and other contaminants. Brush vigorously with the nylon brush, and wipe down with a clean, dry cloth.
