Why We Ski: The Carve

Why We Ski: The Carve

posted: 02/02/2004

At the speed you're going, you ought to be scared. But the snow is flat and edgeable, and the light is perfect. You're square to the fall-line, balanced, leading with the inside hip, butt into the hill, super-sidecuts bent and arcing and unshakably stable. It's one of those beauty-is-truth moments. Used to be, only elite racers understood the complicated dance of pressuring the tip, then milking the tail, to bend their skis in such a way that unlocked the magic of carving. Today, any Joey with a super-sidecut can do it. Now that's scary.
