A Chicago-area landfill owner's dream to build a ski slope on his dump may have been trashed. When the Ford Heights landfill opened in 2002, town leaders predicted a "world-class recreational facility" on the site would draw revenue into the struggling community and supported a bill that would have relaxed regulations to allow the slope. But after the state Environmental Protection Agency cited the landfill for illegal dumping, Gov. Rod Blagojevich vetoed the legislation. Nonetheless, at last measurement, the dump had a vertical approaching 70 feet-and growing.
