Alpine Meadows likes to be hiked. Shoulder your skis or skate for a while, and the 2,400 acres of old-growth forests, cliffs, and bowls will make you wonder whether you just got off the lift or topped out after a long tour. This North Lake Tahoe resort is more laid-back than neighboring Squaw Valley. Which means the powder - a good 500 inches annually - lasts longer. Ski it; then drive three miles to Tahoe City, where you can party rock-star style on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
