Schelper Moves up to A Team, Powers to B Team

Park City, UT Feb. 11--Sarah Schelper (Vail, CO), who has reboundedfrom losing her 1999 season to a broken leg, with the best racing of herinternational career has been named to the alpine A Team and AlisonPowers (Winter Park, CO), who won a Europa Cup super G and was second ina downhill, has been promoted to the B Team, the U.S. Ski Team saidFriday.

Schleper, who missed a chance to compete in the '99 World Championshipsin her hometown because of the leg injury, has been scoring points inslalom and GS this season. She stands 20th in World Cup start listpoints, which is one of the criteria for A Team status, said women'sHead Coach Marjan Cernigoj. Her seventh-place finish in a SL at Mariborduring the first week of the new year is the top alpine result by anyU.S. woman this season.

Powers, bronze medalist at the '99 World Junior Championships and thedefending Nor Am overall and super G champion, electrified many lastmonth when she won a Europa Cup super G in Haus, Austria, afterfinishing fourth and second in a pair of Europa Cup downhills. In thelatest world rankings from the International Ski Federation - for racesthrough the end of January, Cernigoj said, Powers is 50th in super G inthe world and 66th in DH; B Team criteria calls for being in the top 80in the world in two events.
