Speed

These skis are for experts who spend most of their time carving at speed. Wasp-waisted (70-80 mm) carving machines make it easy to tip and rip, even on the hardest snow. Most at home on hardpack, soft or frozen cord, Eastern ice and NASTAR courses

The Austrian brand is back. Once a big player on the race scene, Kastle (KESS-ley) has emerged from the ashes of mismanagement with a new unisex line. No fuss, no gimmicks, it’s a skier’s ski: traditional wood core, sandwich-sidewall construction with Titanal and rubber dampeners. Testers were floored. Great grip, good turn variety, predictable, stable and smooth. Not lauded for versatility, but the MX70 sure is good at what it was built for. “It does one thing, and does it right,” Thys said.

Skis in this category tend to behave, appropriately, like racecars: If you try to keep them in second gear, they jerk you around. But the Burnin Luv is an exception: Smooth and calm at slow speeds, it’s content to let you do the driving. A sheet of metal gives it stability, and a new binding system improves its comparative lack in edge-grip, but it’s the Burnin’s ease and friendly feel that make it shine. “Ramp them up or rein them in—these skis could suit a wide variety of skiers,” Sheinberg said.

We could explain Atomic’s new Doubledeck technology, with its two independently flexing decks that adjust the ski’s power as you pressure it, but we’d rather tell you how it skis. With by far the category's highest score in rebound energy, the VF 75 is the test’s most enthusiastic, popping in and out of turns with boundless verve. A burly construction makes it unwavering at high speeds, but a nimble sidecut makes it comfortable and easy to tip on edge. “Strong, sturdy little ripper,” Sheinberg said.
