Volkl Aurora (2009)
What makes the Aurora innovative isn't the ski-which is similar to the AC50-but its binding. The iPT Wide Ride is 30 percent wider than Völkl's previous systems, providing the energy transfer of a race ski on an 85-cm platform. Testers not only noticed ("Great edge control," said Wilde), but penalized it for being so precise ("Get forward, or I'll see you in the clinic," said Sheinberg). Some felt it confining for the category, but agreed if you're on your game, it rips.
The timid: It's the group's least forgiving.
