Volkl Kink (2014)
The twintip Kink is "park" in spirit, but unlike others in the Freestyle collection, it doesn't turn its back on the rest of the mountain. And given its versatility and attractive price (look for it at around $499) it's a popular choice among youthful rippers. Traditional rearward mounting, rockered tip and tail, and a bi-directional sidecut (tapered at the tail) make the most of all-mountain terrain and snow conditions between jib sessions in the park. Four park-ready models dominate Volkl's youthful Freestyle collection, but it also includes a value-priced do-it-all tweener ski, the Alley, and (because where else in the line are you going to put it?) a competition bump ski, the Mogul. There are three all-park-all-the-time designs: The Wall is the top model, athlete-built; the Step and Ledge are more affordable. The Kink has a more traditional, tapered shape for additional all-mountain versatility. All are metal-free, wood-core constructions, denser underfoot for good binding retention, lighter at the extremities for whippy swing-weight. Some (Wall, Kink, Step) have carbon reinforcement.
