Volkl Shiro (2012)
Tester's Review
The Shiro ranked No. 3 when the numbers were crunched, but consider this: It made every tester's Top 5 list-the only ski to do so. Discrepency? No. Testers had to ding it in Forgiveness (No. 9) and Quickness (No. 13)-because it's huge-but loved Shiro for its unflappable power. To make it manageable, Volkl replaces metal with carbon and makes the Shiro dense underfoot and lighter at the extremities. Rocker helps, too. Still, it's a lot of ski, one that crushes crud (No. 1) and soars in powder. "So easy for such a big ski," said Hogen. "Makes you ski better."
