Built for strong experts and big-mountain freeriding, the Stormrider Pro returns again this season. It's the stiffest and most powerful Stormrider, and Stockli gives it a bit of tip rocker. It comes in two lengths-big (190 cm, 105 mm waist) and bigger (201 cm, 106 mm waist). Both models have long-turn sidecuts (27.5 and 31.8 radii respectively) for high-speed stability. Stockli's Stormrider series is a collection of eight models built for freeriding adventurers. The series includes the Swiss brand's top sellers in the U.S. market, and waist widths range from a powder-ready 115 mm to a touring-capable 79 mm (at 170 cm). Rocker profiles vary, from subtle to pronounced, depending on model, and all are classic Stockli constructions: wood cores for responsiveness, metal reinforcement for durability, and high-speed calm, vertical sidewalls for optimized edge grip and solidity. A main difference between Stormrider constructions and other Stocklis is the upper layer of metal that serves as the topsheet of the ski, rather than being covered by another laminate. This makes the topsheets uncommonly durable and gives the Stormriders a rich appearance. Core compositions, though, vary from model to model. Stockli's Light Core combines two different woods-sturdy, resilient ash and lightweight fuma (a tropical hardwood). Stockli's Super Light Cores incorporate balsa wood along with the other two for additional weight savings. Here's what testers say: "This ski is not as mean as it looks. It makes me want to go find a cliff and jump off. It's surprisingly easy to make quick turns, and has lots of horsepower. Bring your A-game!" - Colin "This is a big burly ski for big burly guys. It only has one turn shape: Big. Not very agile or playful. You need big open terrain to ski with it-tight trees are not an option unless you have tree trunks for legs." - Mike Britt "The Stormrider Pro is damp to a fault. Pretty awesome, though, just plows through everything. Strong skiers with race boots will love these. They're hard-charging tanks." - Jeremy Benson "For the right guy, this is a great ski. It just kinda kicks my ass. Meaty, hefty, really stable. Sketchy on the traverse, but loves the fall line. Racy but refined." - Kevin Luby

You know who you are. Patrol does too; they just can't catch you. Testers anointed this the true speed demon of the Mixed Snow East category. It wasn't just No. 1 in Stability at Speed; it was No. 1 by a lot. And it's surprisingly versatile, too. Testers gave it high marks for its crud skills, but they were so blown away by its race-ready, Swiss-made precision in fast arcs that it was almost all they could talk about. Expert hard-snow chargers (who can afford it) will meet their match; intermediates will be overmatched. Moffatt: "Smooth, solid, awe- some. I want to make an analogy to some luxury car, but I've never driven one this nice."

The new all-mountain women's ski from Stockli has an 85-mm waist, so it's preferred habitat is groomed snow, but it's wide enough to handle mixed-snow conditions too. Stockli, known for its cambered precision on hardpack, introduces Powder Rocker in this ski-the longest rockered tip in its collection. A new wood core is 10 percent lighter than the unisex version, with linen-reinforced balsa wood combined with fuma and ash, then reinforced with metal. The wood core lends responsiveness and integrity; the metal laminates durability and high-speed calm. Vertical sidewalls give edge grip and solidity. Women's models, like the Motion, also boast a Softflex construction, which is more flexible for lighter frames and easier to control. Stockli Skis, now under its third generation of family ownership, is based in Wohusen, Switzerland, near Lucerne.

How fat can you go without sacrificing groomed-snow performance? The Stormrider awed testers with its hard- snow grip. Looking for some- thing surfy and playful? Try something else. Testers have come to expect power and precision from Stockli, and this ski delivers. It's unshakable in crud, loves long arcs on soft groomers, and prefers to travel through deep snow rather than surf on top of it. Larson: "Forgiving for a Stockli. Great versatility for on-trail skiing."

Some testers felt this ski was supremely effortless for all abilities, while others advised wearing "big-girl pants" when skiing it. They're both right: This ski is both easy and strong, a rare combo. Rossi's lightweight honeycombed Air Tip gives it incredible pivotability, but a beefy cap-sandwich con- struction (the same as the unisex Super 7's) and strong tail get after big lines. "Point it down the fall line and it magically does the work for you," said McElroy.

After three years on the podium, the Experience 88 finally ascends to the top step. Rossi's recent resurgence owes a lot to the Experience line of frontside generalists, and the 88 has always been the testers' favorite. With its huge tip and deep shape it's a can't-miss carver with enough width and tip rocker for soft-snow fun too. It's metal- free but still awes testers with its speed-loving dampness (Air Tip concentrates mass underfoot; damper-than-fiberglass basalt fibers further quiet the ride). Added stiffness this year gives it more oomph. Beekman: "Balanced flex tip to tail. Feels agile and damp at the same time."

How fitting that a ski testers described as "perfect for the masses" should sell in massive quantities. This returning category crusher has perhaps the broadest ability envelope of any ski in the test. Ex- perts use its rockered, tip-tapered smearability to go crazy fast in terra incognita, knowing they can shut it down fast in "oh, $!*#!" moments. Inter- mediates can use that float and easy pivotability to finally master powder skiing. And sure, it's mostly a powder ski-but one that arcs readily enough on groomers to qualify for daily-driver status in soft- snow locales. Withey: "As versatile as any in this class. Could put anyone on this ski."

At that price, the Laser AX had better be good. It is. Compare and contrast with Volkl's RTM, with which it ties for the top spot in the rankings: Where the Volkl aims for a measure of all-conditions, all-terrain versatility, the Laser, true to its name, focuses on hard-snow precision. It's a veritable GS race ski. Testers were awed by its "epoxied to the snow" edge grip and its pure greed for speed. Go find the hardest snow you can, then dice it with confidence-provided, as testers warned, you have the strength and ability to manage this ski. Luby: "What an exhilarating ride. Great suspension and dampness. Lives up to its price tag."

For all the recent buzz about the sexy, slashy benefits of tapered tips, the Shiro's scores prove that testers still have a soft spot for strong, lively, directional performance. Sure, Volkl's trademark full-length rocker gives it loose pivotability in deep snow and crud. But put it on edge and rest assured it's going to bend deeply into carve-ready arcs-and then release with thrilling, best-in- category, way-across-the-fall-line rebound. It's not a difficult ski, but testers agreed that its qualities are best appreciated by aggressive skiers. Moffatt: "Surfy and stable in deep and still very manage- able in crud. Surprisingly nimble. Super versatile."
