Testers were unanimous: “instant edge response,” “all-star ability to drive the ski,” etc. And this narrow-fit favorite grabbed a big share of best-in-category and best-of- test votes. It’s not new, but key elements have been tweaked. The liner better matches the firm fit and feel of the RX- series liners for better energy transmission and foot hold, and the upper cuff is stiffer. Bouchard: “It’s one with the mountain.”

The Minaret 100 is one of the few all-new boots in this category. Its tough, long- travel 100 flex loads energy to the ski predictably and provides a solid rearward backstop that helps maintain balance. Testers liked the boot’s crisp and snappy rebound. Some said that with the rear spoiler installed the stance was a little forward, but most liked it. Ross: “Great stance with a good, even, responsive flex.”

When the scores were tallied, this boot topped a strong-skiing category. Its 100 width and 100 flex are Goldilocks-right for advanced and expert skiers without being too burly for cruisers. Testers found the medium-width fit ideally snug, appreciat- ing the updated liner’s extra toe room. Vir- tually every tester vouched for this boot’s quick, powerful character. Ross: “Ski as aggressively as you want; it holds up.”

Testers with a wide variety of foot and leg shapes were able to jump into this boot and get straight to the business of ripping. It’s a medium width that hedges toward the snug side with a firm grab on the heel and ankle and a slightly short-feeling length. Its Adaptive Fit shell can be made narrower with the turn of a nut on its sole. Parazoo: “Very responsive. Skis like a narrow-category boot.”

There’s no gap in the Vector’s game—ex- cept for the one between it and the boots it outperforms for a hundred bucks less. The cushy-snug liner wraps the foot and lower leg firmly upon entry but then re- laxes on the hill. The 95 flex is as strong as many 110s. On snow it was balanced to a T and powerful on edge—surprisingly agile and responsive in all turns. Post: “Flexes so smoothly. Very reliable everywhere.”

This boot fit tight pretty much everywhere. So it’s no surprise that testers with techni- cal backgrounds—coaches, upper-level instructors, and ex-racers—were the ones who fell hardest for it. Some even jumped up a full size to gain toe room—without losing much in the way of snug heel and ankle fit. On snow, it performs at the high- est levels. Goldsmith-Rahill: “As dynamic as you get short of a full-blown race boot.”

The Zephyr 11 fits great out of the box, and getting it on and off is a snap. Testers said it skied flawlessly in all conditions. It comes with the additional fit insurance of Fischer’s unique Vacuum molding process, in which the shell is heat-softened and then compressed against the foot. It’s snugger than most medium fits, which tes- ters liked. Poore: “Makes turns where and when you want. Good feel underfoot.”

The three-piece construction of the Kyra yields a smooth-travel flex, but it’s still firm enough to pin the throttle. Testers liked it last year; this year they tried the I.D. version, with its spiral-wrapping custom liner, which improves calf fit and makes it easier to get on. It continued to impress with its comfortably snug feel and above- expectations performance. Risseeuw: “A genie in a bottle; obeys every command.”

This perennial medium-width favorite scores points for both performance and value. The slightly lower than average cuff keeps movements agile and tuned in to the snow. The shell is tailored specifically for women, with a little extra room in typical problem spots, including around the ankle and the outside of the forefoot. Risseeuw: “Powerful and compact. Handles varied conditions with ease.”

A complete makeover on a popular model can be a risky bet, but Atomic has suc- ceeded. A relaxed fit and a flared cuff welcome thicker feet and muscular legs to the medium-width club. The new shell is heat-moldable. And a Thinsulate layer pre- serves warmth. Testers said the new Hawx was easy to ski with great snow feel, if a bit shy of its marked 100 stiffness. Rogers: “A forward-thinking design.”
