Miller's Title Hopes Thwarted as Weather Cancels Men's GS

Miller's Title Hopes Thwarted as Weather Cancels Men's GS

SHIGAKOGEN, Japan March 7, 2003 (AP)--Bode Miller's bid to win the overall title took a blow when a World Cup giant slalom race was canceled Friday because of poor weather.

With high winds and poor visibility at the Shigakogen ski resort, organizers called off Friday's race. Strong winds are expected to continue through the weekend, and Saturday's slalom also could be canceled.

Shigakogen is the second-to-last event of the World Cup season. The final is scheduled for March 12-16 in Lillehammer, Norway, site of the 1994 Winter Olympics.

The cancellation of Friday's race was a major disappointment for Miller, who is trying to become the first American to win the World Cup overall title since Phil Mahre in 1983.

Austria's Stephan Eberharter, who holds a slight lead in his bid to retain the overall title, has 1,153 points—93 more than Miller.

The giant slalom is one of Miller's best events. He's second in the standings and won gold in the discipline at last month's World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
