Mt. Snow, Vermont: Rank 10 East, 1997

Mount Snow had cruising terrain before anybody even knew what cruising was. If you ski mostly blue, you'll roam with diplomatic immunity. Criticisms? The mostly big, broad boulevards can seem as uniform as West Point haircuts. The meandering Sunbrook trails are more interesting, but unfortunately the lift (an old double) doesn't run weekdays. The North Face runs are satisfyingly steep, but short. Mount Snow doesn't get the snow of its northerly neighbors, but as one reader pointed out, "the snowmakers and groomers do a very good job in difficult conditions." If the crowds crush, take a free, five-minute shuttle to Haystack, Mount Snow's low-key sister area. The Snow Barn is the happening nightspot with live music and dancing. For a romantic dinner, the Inn at Sawmill Farm or The Hermitage never disappoint. Families aren't neglected: Older teens hang at the Planet 9 After Dark lounge in the lodge; middle-school and younger kids hit the Cave Club.

What's New A high-speed quad serving the Carinthia slopes; a Magic Carpet escalator at Beaver; the Grand Summit Hotel and Crown Club is slated to open in early 1998.
A Good Deal Teddy Bear ski weeks. Kids 12 and under ski free when parents purchase five-day lodging-and-lift package. Prices begin at $736 per family; (800) 245-7669.
Medals Silver Snow Quality, Grooming, Terrain, Lifts.
High/Low Rank Grooming (27); Value (65).
Don't Miss Bruce Jacques and the Invisible Band at Cuzzins Bar & Deli in the Main Lodge.
Reader Remarks "Close, nice size. Fun nightlife." "Needs new lifts. The parking is too far away."
