Mount Snow, Vt.: Rank 10 East, 1998

Good things may come to those who wait, but better things come to those who don't. Since American Skiing Company chief Les Otten got his hands on this southern Vermont skier magnet two years ago, he's given it a welcome facelift. Mount Snow has added two high-speed quads, anchored the sprawling base area with the Grand Summit Resort Hotel¿also a key skier-services hub¿and broadened its trails, teaching areas and terrain parks. Snowmaking also has been beefed up with 100 widespread tower guns¿ideal for Mount Snow's broad slopes. Despite the expansive terrain, there's little here to scare expert skiers. Its greatest asset is a sea of blue trails. "Fun for everyone," a reader says. The resort even has an escape hatch: the low-key satellite area Haystack, which is a nice solution to Mount Snow's most irritating problem: "massive weekend crowds and long liftlines." A swinging place when it debuted in the Fifties, Mount Snow has become family-friendly. The children's learning and childcare facilities have always been strong. New this year is a mini-terrain park and an indoor playground. Older kids are entertained with a lighted tubing park, sledding hill and night skiing/boarding on the Mixing Bowl trail.
