Re-Inventing Stowe

The single largest component of the proposed $150 million redevelopment of Stowe is Spruce Hamlet, a 35-acre village sited at the base of Spruce Peak. In total, 423 development units and some 800 beds will be added, all slopeside.

If approved, the Hamlet will be anchored by a new day lodge fronting the slopes. Behind that: a 200-room hotel, a town common/skating rink, a pedestrian plaza dotted with eight retail buildings; additional residential units; fitness facilities; and a parking area near the new main auto entrance, further down the hill. Adjacent to the parking lot will be the clubhouse and first tee of an 18-hole golf course.

A few hundred yards up the hill from the day lodge will be the new Mt. Mansfield Club (above), a high-end, 61-unit, interval-ownership development, with additional units clustered nearby.

On the mountain, the Little Spruce and Big Spruce doubles will be replaced by detachable quads, and trails will be added and reconfigured. Meanwhile, an interconnect lift will link Spruce Peak to the Mansfield area, where the historic base lodge will be doubled in size. To the right of the lodge, a covered escalator will transport skiers to the lifts.

On the hill, a new quad to the left of the Gondola will access new terrain in between Nosedive and Perry Merrill; the Lookout Double will be replaced with a detachable quad; and another new quad will access the far-left edge of the resort, connecting to the Toll House double. At the Toll House base area, the Inn at the Mountain will be renovated and expanded by 115 rooms.

In sum, terrain expansion will take Stowe from 420 skiable acres to 556, including 44 acres at Spruce, 92 at Mansfield. And all of it will be better covered by snowmaking.
