Utah Picked for Freestyle World Champions

Melbourne, Australia, June 1 (AP)--Utah's Deer Valley resort, one of the ski venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics, was picked Thursday as the site of the 2003 Freestyle World Championships.

The selection, announced at the International Ski Federation biennial convention, marks the first time the United States will stage the world championships since Lake Placid, N.Y., in 1991. The 2001 championships will be Jan. 17-21 at Whistler, British Columbia.

The 2003 championships will run Jan. 31-Feb. 2, officials said.

In the same announcement, FIS said the 2003 Snowboard World Championships will be held in Murau/Kreischberg, Austria, with the 2005 Alpine championships in Bormio, Italy, and the 2005 Nordic championships were awarded to Oberstdorf, Germany.

Deer Valley, one of three Park City resorts, will be the Olympic venue for both Olympic freestyle events _ moguls and aerials _ as well as one men's and women's slalom race.

Deer Valley hosted World Cup freestyle events last winter and will stage pre-Olympic test events in early January. Final dates will be announced later in the FIS convention.
