WHISTLER, BC, April 7, 2003 - With last night's JUNO Award win under their belts, Swollen Members is eager to celebrate with fans at the DKNY//JEANS LIVE Outdoor Concert Series in Whistler - one of the star attractions of the world-renowned TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, April 11-20.
Swollen Members was last night awarded a Juno for Rap Recording of the Year for their latest release, Monsters In the Closet. Swollen Members will be performing April 16 as one of the main acts at the DKNY//JEANS LIVE Outdoor Concert Series which includes about 30 live acts across 10 days - and it's all free.
Set to crush the musical cravings of tens of thousands of Festival goers, the eclectic collection of top-billing bands also includes Swollen Members, Swedish rock wonder The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, the explosive quartet I Mother Earth, the soulful Sweatshop Union, rising mic star Kazzer, and fast and furious Treble Charger.
Kicking off the 10-day Festival on April 11 will be previous Juno-award winners I Mother Earth who will be playing tunes from the band?s just-released CD The Quicksilver Meat Dream.
Playing the same day is Whistler favourites WDC (Whole Damn County), and Kazzer, a 25-year-old rhyme-master with a debut album on Epic called Go For Broke.
Festival organisers have pulled together an impressive line-up for this year's free concert series that will be cranking out pumping tunes from the Mainstage every day of the 10-day Festival, April 11-20. As the Festival?s entertainment agent, Brad Josling says the line-up is promising to be the biggest and most diverse in the 8-year history of the Festival. "This concert series epitomises what live music is all about - bringing together an awesome mix of emerging talent, established rock stars and cutting edge musicians. These specially handpicked DJs and bands form the soundtrack to what is lauded as the greatest snowsports party in the world," says Josling of Diamond Dog Music.
As a main feature of the concert series - and the Festival - a trilogy of DJs courtesy of Ninja Tune is being brought to Whistler to stun audiences with their turntable wizardry during the Big Air spectacle of the Garnier Fructis World Skiing Invitational. The DJ threesome is Brazilian DJ extraordinaire Amon Tobin, spin-meister Bonobo and scritchin- scratchin- Kid Koala.
These three DJs will be performing to the backdrop of spinning and twisting skiers as they reach incredible heights and display amazing feats for the Salomon Big Air on the night of Saturday April 19, 6-9pm.
For every day of the Festival, except April 19, the concerts are scheduled from 3pm-6pm - three hours of powerful and inspiring music. And the entire concert series is free - every day. Concerts in previous years have attracted anywhere up to 10,000 on any day of the Festival.
For the Ripzone Snowboard Invitational Big Air on Saturday, April 12, snowboarders will be defying gravity as the "A Team" mouth off their emcee-inspired tributes to the athletes' performances. The "A Team" consists of Aceyalone, Abstract Rude (Tribe Unique) and Tajai (Souls of Mischief) - all inspiring DJs with their own unique take on the hip hop sound.
With over 30 acts for this jam-packed line-up of the DKNY//JEANS LIVE Outdoor Concert Series, there's no shortage of talent and skilful entertainers. Other acts include Alarmbell, Not By Choice, 99.3 The FOX's Vancouver SEEDS 2003 Showcase, Kia Kadiri, Brassmunk, The Salads, By A Thread, Vinyl Ritchie, Dj Science, Lady P, Girl Nobody, Billy and the Lost Boys, Killa Kela - the world renowned human beat-box from the UK, Grace Nocturnal, WDC, Mat The Alien, and Billy Talent.
Located in the centre of Whistler Village where the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains converge in the highest traffiic zone, the Mainstage - which rises two storeys and spans 52 feet - is the epicentre for the Festival's party buzz, exuding an atmosphere not matched by any other event on this side of the planet.
The Festival has become the stomping ground for emerging artists destined to make headlines including the likes of Nickelback, Mix Master Mike, Big Sugar, Pennywise, Matthew Good Band and Sloan.
