2003 Snowbird-Jackson Hole Tram Off

Two resorts, two trams, two teams, one day. On Tuesday, January 7, Skiing Magazine will pit Jackson Hole against Snowbird to see which resort's four-person team can log the most vertical feet from a tram in one day. From 9:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m., these two teams will ride tram after tram and the squad with the most cumulative vertical feet at the end of the day will win the competition.

The Teams:

The Snowbird team consists of four professional women athletes including snowboarder Shannon Yates, telemarker Kasha Rigby, telemarker Sarah Clemenson, and alpine skier Nora Pincus. This team will race against the Jackson crew of Olympian Tommy Moe, snowboarder John Griber, telemarker Scott MgGhee and freeskier AJ Cargill.

The Stats:

The Snowbird tram extends over 2,900 vertical feet and takes about 7-8 minutes bottom-to-top. Running at 22 mph, max speed, it's possible for each athlete to cover 75 total miles and 87,000 vertical feet in a total of 30 tram rides.

The Jackson Hole tram covers 4,139 vertical feet and takes a total of 12 minutes from bottom-to-top. The tram at Jackson covers more vertical feet, yet it takes two-thirds longer to get to the top.

Snowbird may have the edge on paper, but the weather and athlete stamina will play a critical role in the final outcome. Tune in to www.skiingmag.com on Tuesday to keep track of the teams and vertical feet throughout the day. At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, we will announce the toughest U.S. team.
