Hidden in a strip mall, Caffe Rustica is a Lake Placid secret.
The restaurant is located in a strip mall, so it looks less than exciting from the outside, but give it a chance and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is cozy and comforting even though the seating is tight and it can get rather loud. Rustica fills up quickly starting at about 5:30 p.m. so arrive early or prepare to wait for up to an hour. Start off with the crab cakes. They are roasted to perfection (not fried) and come with a delicious tomato remoulade. If you are looking for a more casual meal, the pizzas are delicious.
f you’re looking for the ultimate local breakfast spot in Lake Placid, Ashley’s Café is the place. During the high season, the initial wait can belong, but once you are seated, the food comes out fast. Diner pancakes can be hit or miss, but Ashley’s are wonderfully fluffy and the chocolate chip ones are delicious when doused in local syrup. If you prefer savory to sweet, try a classic egg dish with sausage, and their amazing rye toast. For a healthier option, go with their homemade oatmeal.
