El Niño trends often mean heavy snowfall, but other effects -- warmer temps and drier weather for some parts of the country -- aren't as welcome. Will the weathermen get it right this year?

The El Niño year has begun

Looks like El Niño is on his way. It's only the middle of September -- and the last day of summer -- but the first snow of the season is already hitting Colorado ski country. While last week was shorts weather here at the Ski offices, this morning we woke up to 40-degree temps and a heap of dark clouds over the mountains.

NOAA predicts big snows for many areas this winter

We don't want to jinx anything, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the guys and gals who watch the weather for the government) tells us the climate is in an El Niño pattern at the moment -- and will be through the upcoming winter. Typically, El Niño years mean big snowfall for the Sierras (Northern California and Nevada), the Rockies (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona), and the northern and southern tips of the Appalachians.
