Opened in summer 2010, paintball at Squaw Valley offers participants the chance for friendly competition on two different courses.

Opened in summer 2010, paintball at Squaw Valley offers participants the chance for friendly competition on the natural-terrain “Woodsball” course or the “Speedball” course, which is made of artificial obstacles. Open noon to 5 p.m. each day, prices are $45 for adults and $40 for kids without purchase of a cable car ticket, or $29 for adults and $24 for kids with the purchase of a cable car ticket. Each round is approximately one hour and 150 rounds of paint.

National Museum of Wildlife Art Located on a butte above a wildlife refuge, the National Museum of Wildlife Art blends animals and culture in a uniquely Jackson way. Many of the exhibits rotate frequently, but some real kid-pleasers, like the Bison Gallery, are permenant.

The outdoor ice rink at Sun Valley is open all year, and has public skate sessions every day. Visitors can rent hockey or figure skates, and ski in the sun or the snow. They also have group and private lessons available.

Sun Valley Ice Shows

Watch professional figure skaters skate on the outdoor rink every Saturday during the summer.

The weekly ice shows at the outdoor rink in Sun Valley run every Saturday night from the end of June through Labor Day. All shows start at dusk, and you can buy a ticket that allows you to eat at the buffet beforehand. Each year the shows have a different theme, this summer it’s western, and different headliners perform each week. Olympic skaters such as Johnny Weir and Sasha Cohen headline, and other professional skaters, 15 in all, are there each week. They also have a free performance on Christmas Eve.

Trail Rides and Sleigh Rides

Take a guided trail ride up Dollar Mountain on your summer visit to Sun Valley.

Children 8-years-old and older can join their parents on a 60- or 90-minute trail ride on Dollar Mountain. From Memorial Day weekend through the end of October, guided trail rides and wagon rides are offered daily. If you’ve never gotten on a horse, don’t fret: the guides specialize in ensuring that first-time riders are comfortable and enjoy themselves. In the winter, sleigh rides are available to the Trail Creek Cabin restaurant.

Every Thursday, the Beaver Creek ski school has a glow stick-lighted ski parade down the Haymeadow while the ski patrol sets off fireworks from higher up on the mountain. Intermediate skiers and above can participate while lower-level skiers can watch and roast marshmallows outside McCoys Café.

Rock Bottom Ranch, run by the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, offers environmental education, hands-on science lessons and farm tours. They run seasonal specific programs, so if you stop by in the later winter, or early spring, you might get to see baby animals being born. It’s open Monday through Friday in the winter.

A constantly rotating gallery of local and national work, the Aspen Art Museum makes a special effort to keep their space family friendly. To facilitate learning, the museum has free art supplies so kids can paint, draw, or write if inspiration hits them. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday and admission is free.

The White Cap Base Lodge houses restaurants, ice skating, and snow-tubing during the winter season.

Located in the White Cap Base Lodge, the center includes a tubing park and an ice skating rink. There are also two restaurants—the Shipyard Brew Haus and Mountains of Pasta, located in the Lodge— parents can enjoy an appetizer and a drink while kids tube down the hill.

Every year, Sunday River dedicates an entire week to family activities. In 2011, it is January 10 through 14, and includes scavenger hunts, live entertainment, movies, and themed ski and snowboard lessons. During the week children ski, snowboard, stay, rent, and get lessons completely free.
