Take away the ski area, the shops, the splendid spas and restaurants of Stowe, and what's left would be a pleasure in itself. A quaint Vermont village to stroll, streams to picnic beside, mountains to hike and endless dirt roads to meander.
When white gives way to green, stow your skis, break out your other sticks and head to the Stratton Mountain Country Club. A six-year stop on the LPGA Tour, the club offers three nine-hole courses with pitched and narrow fairways.
The tram was crowded this morning as it climbed rapidly in the clear blue French sky. The 22 inches of new powder snow had gotten everyone in town up early. Waiting in line took longer than normal because of the early birds with inside connections.
