Binding Glossary

Sound like a pro tech shop owner once you get these terms down - or least know how to shop for bindings.

>Anti-friction device (AFD): The slippery surface or sliding mechanism under the boot toe that helps it to slide sideways out of the binding toepiece during release

>Boot-out: What occurs when the side of a boot hits the snow in a highly edged turn, forcing the ski’s edge out of snow and disrupting the carved arc

Gear of the Year: 2002

When manufacturers conceive new ways to make skiing more fun, credit is due. Here's the best of 2002.

Ski It Your Way

Make the mountian your private symphony.

Rossignol Energy 10.1

Most skis in the Aspiring Carver category aspire to make the turn easier. The Rossignol Energy 10.1 aspires to make it better.

Salomon Axendo 7

All the testers agreed-the Salomon Axendo 7, with the same dimensions as the upper-end Axendos, is an incredibly easy ski; it can take a timid but determined intermediate from hesitation to celebration in a few turns.

Hart Contour SP

Hart, with its popular, moderate sidecut and ultralight feel, has become known for automatic initiation and supple flex. The SP is no exception.

Out With the Old, In With the New: Part II, Step 4

Modern skiers know how to use their equipment, the snow and the terrain to their benefit-and you can too.

Edge Wise

Harder snow makes Eastern skiers better, but a poor tune can ruin all the fun.

Salomon Bindings 2001

Salomon chose not to present its new Pilot binding-ski system. Instead, representative Dave Young re-emphasized Poweraxe interfaces, introduced in 1999, as "the only systems designed specifically to get the most out of today's shaped skis."
