Sidetracks: Lake Placid Olympic Sports Center

Feed your need for speed off the slopes with a bobsled ride down Lake Placid’s World Cup track.

It should come as no surprise that skiers have a thing for speed. So it’s no wonder that they sign their waivers, wait in long lines, climb into five-person bobsleds manned by professional drivers and brakemen and shoot down the World Cup track at upstate New York’s Lake Placid Olympic Sports Center. Twisting, icy and fast,
the steel-reinforced concrete halfpipe delivers a short but stomach-lurching thrill—and is well worth an afternoon off the slopes of nearby Whiteface.

Stocking Stuffers

From the quirky to the exquisite: Ski-town stores handsomely reward the gift-shopper. Here are a few starter ideas:

2001 Number 4 Resort in the East: Whiteface, N.Y.

The best thing about Whiteface is the worst thing about Whiteface: no slopeside condos, no base village, just trees. That, of course, means uncluttered scenery-and a 10-mile commute to nearby Lake Placid for lodging.

Alpine Water: Exploring Lake Placid

Lake Placid's intrigue begins in town, where Mirror Lake-undisturbed by any gas-powered craft-laps softly at the edge of the business district.

Summer Resorts 2000-Northeast, Mount Snow, Vt.

Summer in Southern Vermont? Scenic beauty is a given, but Mount Snow ensures there's as much to do as to see.

Whiteface, N.Y.: Rank 7 East, 1998

If a buffet is your favorite kind of meal, then Whiteface is your ski destination. The former Olympic hill and its Lake Placid hub have a smorgasbord of winter activities.
