Reader Resort Survey 2005: Midwest No.4 - Nub's Nob

Midwest No. 4: Nub's Nob, Harbor Springs, Mich.

Nub's Nob, Mich.: Rank 2 East of Lake Michigan, 1998

Nub's Nob wrestled El Niño to the mat last winter and pinned it. While other resorts were whining, Nub's had its best year ever, which may explain why readers ranked it as the top ski-only (no lodging) resort in the Midwest.

2003 Number 1 Resort in the Midwest: Nub's Nob, Mich.

When Nub's Nob shot to the top of the Midwest Top 10 last year, it was a shocker. After all, the northern Michigan resort is a ski area with no hotel, no snazzy restaurants and no marketing director in a three-piece suit.

2003 Number 30 Resort in North America: Alpine Meadows, Calif.

It's not as glitzy as next-door Squaw Valley. Nor does it have all the amenities of its more famous neighbor. And you won't find many ski-and-snowboard rock stars hanging out at the base here. But you won't find many posers, either.

2002 Number 1 Resort in the Midwest: Nub's Nob, Mich.

Nub's Nob finishing No. 1 in the Midwest is the biggest upset since Apollo Creed's lights were turned out by Rocky Balboa. One reader says Nub's is the "Midwest's best-kept secret." That's about to change.
