Whistler Opening Day 2009, Nov 14
Twenty-eight inches in twenty-four hours

Olympics notwithstanding, looks like Whistler Blackcomb's set to have a big ol' season. The British Columbia, Canada-based resort opened this past Saturday -- earlier than expected -- thanks to some recent snow-crazy storms. The most recent of these dumped 28 inches in 24 hours. Yes, that's a two and an eight.

Vermont's Mount Snow opens, donates first weekend's revenue to local food bank

Folks, we've got another one. Opening day hit Mount Snow last Saturday, making it the first (and currently only) resort in Vermont to open for the 2009–10 ski season. Over 700 skiers -- and, y'know, boarders -- put wax to slope for the first time in too many months. But Snow had a bonus in store: All of its opening weekend revenue is going to be donated to the nearby Deerfield Valley Food Pantry.

Early-season records for opening day are being set left and right

Is this the start of a banner year or what? Colorado's Arapahoe Basin opened last week, earlier than it ever has, and Loveland had its earliest season opening in 40 years. Even Las Vegas's local hill opened a full seven weeks ahead of schedule.

Are you ready for ski season? You'd better be: It's here. Boasting its earliest opening day in 40 years, Colorado’s Loveland Ski Area opened this morning, becoming the first ski resort in North America to do so for the 2009-10 season. How about skiing at Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort? Bet on it. Less than an hour from the Vegas strip, Las Vegas resort opened beginner terrain this morning, a full seven weeks before its targeted opening day.
