Show up in a Zipcar, get $15 off

The only way this deal could get easier is if they also had someone to buckle your boots for you. The Waterville Valley, N.H., ski area is offering discounted lift tickets to Boston-area skiers who show up in a Zipcar. College students will get $30 lift tickets -- everybody in the car is included -- and everybody else gets $15 off their tickets. Ski and snowboard rentals are also discounted to $28 per day.

An unhappy customer complains about Durango Mountain Resort; DMR strikes back

Oh boy -- this one's sure to start some debate. According to The Durango Herald (Colo.), Durango Mountain Resort "has revoked a woman's season pass for publicly criticizing the ski area's new operating schedule." The backstory: In the early and late season, DMR often only opens on weekends.

Utah conglomerate takes Colorado mountain off Intrawest's hands

After Colorado tried and failed to get a foothold in Utah, looks like Utah tried to get a foothold in Colorado -- and succeeded. Colorado's Vail Resorts attempted purchase of The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, a few months back was a bust.

Vermont's Mount Snow opens, donates first weekend's revenue to local food bank

Folks, we've got another one. Opening day hit Mount Snow last Saturday, making it the first (and currently only) resort in Vermont to open for the 2009–10 ski season. Over 700 skiers -- and, y'know, boarders -- put wax to slope for the first time in too many months. But Snow had a bonus in store: All of its opening weekend revenue is going to be donated to the nearby Deerfield Valley Food Pantry.

Mammoth Mountain Scenic, Winter 2009
Early-season records for opening day are being set left and right

Is this the start of a banner year or what? Colorado's Arapahoe Basin opened last week, earlier than it ever has, and Loveland had its earliest season opening in 40 years. Even Las Vegas's local hill opened a full seven weeks ahead of schedule.

Westin Riverfront for Kids
Beaver Creek, Telluride and Stowe among the winners

Everybody remembers their first trip to the ski hill as a kid. The steep terror of the "beginner" slope, the pain of squeezing tiny feet into tinier plastic boots, Mom and Dad abandoning you with an overeager Aussie instructor who insisted on calling you Peanut... No? Maybe that was just us. Maybe you remember the thrill of being young and in the outdoors, and the freedom that skis suddenly offered, and the hot chocolate that always ended every day. Skiing as a kid can be one of the best experiences of youth, but it can also be one of the worst.

Lift Attendant at Snowbasin
Aspen, Vail and others upping their numbers of local hires

Surely you've noticed in the last decade or so that the number of local kids and domestic ski bums manning the chairlifts and ticket windows of America's ski resorts has declined, their roles taken over by Argentines and Kiwis. The reasons for this are debatable -- though we think it has to do with a generation of skiing parents eager to give their kids the ski-bum experience they never had. At any rate, we're about to see more locals in on-hill uniforms this season.
