Erik Schlopy was the first skier on a snowy slalom course. That meant everybody else was racing for second place. Schlopy won the men's slalom Wednesday at U.S. Alpine nationals, beating runner-up Casey Puckett by more than one second.
One of the toughest conditions to ski has nothing to do with bad snow but with the lack of light. When light is "flat," the slope looks like a white, empty canvas, and it's impossible to read the snow surface clearly.
