NY Ski Areas Launches StoptheSkiTax.com

The Governor of New York State has proposed a budget which contains a sales tax on lift tickets and lessons. NY Ski Areas are trying to stop it.

The Governor of New York State has proposed a budget which contains a sales tax on lift tickets and lessons. Ski Areas of New York, Inc. (SANY), a trade association that represents the ski industry in New York State, opposes this proposed sales tax. SANY wants skiers and riders in New York to know the facts and to provide them with a simple and easy method to contact their state legislators. To that end, SANY launched the new
site stoptheskitax.com in February.

Waterville Valley Resort Marks 40 Years

Waterville Valley Resort, New Hampshire, has been well known for its ski area, which features trails and activities for all ages and abilities.

In the mid-60s, Olympic skier Tom Corcoran scoured northern New England for just the right mountain to fulfill his vision of a year-round destination ski resort. When he saw Waterville Valley- which then had only a couple of rope tows and trails, an inn, and 500 acres of land for sale -Tom knew it was the place. The region is a snow pocket, and the U.S. Forest Service had already mapped Mount Tecumseh as a potential ski area. With guaranteed forest around its borders, Corcoran knew he could limit development by purchasing almost all of the privately held land in the valley.

Rebirth for Burke, VT

In Vermont’s remote, lovely Northeast Kingdom, resort developers have big plans for a quiet little town and its long-slumbering ski area.

“This is it?” That was my first thought upon arriving at Burke as a teenager for a ski race some 25 years ago. That phrase became a refrain as I hiked the slalom course next to the small, broken-down, Poma and sought refuge from the New England cold in the bare-bones Mid-Burke Lodge. Knowing Burke Academy’s reputation for churning out Olympians, I was shocked that so humble an operation had such stature. Of course, like many youngsters, I wasn’t looking very far beyond my own ski tips.

Market Report: Steamboat Springs, CO

Inspired by an ambitious ski area renovation, Steamboat’s real estate market is getting a makeover.

When Kevin and Donna Wang’s oldest daughter left their home in New York to attend college across the country in Arizona, they were thrilled. Frequent visits to see her would give them an excuse to stop in Steamboat Springs, Colo., where they’ve taken annual family ski vacations since 2000.

Ride 'em & Rank 'em

Ride 'em & Rank 'em

Wachusett's demo program is one of the most unique in the country offering skiers a chance to try next years skis.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

Dropping into Gucci or Chanel then hobnobbing at the polo match is at least as fashionable as skiing the hundreds of miles of groomed trails around St. Moritz.

St. Moritz's reputation as a playground for the world's very, very rich is well-deserved. Private jets wing in and out of the local airport like spokes on a wheel, carrying British aristocrats, Italian elite and Russian tsarinas. Few ski destinations can claim even one five-star hotel, but this sunny Swiss lakeside resort boasts five (including the new all-suites Carlton, located in Tsar Nicolai II's former vacation house).
