Though today’s skiers might have less money to spend, they’re enjoying deep discounts in both lift tickets and lodging, as well as a reemphasis on customer service.
Skiers are spending less and searching for better values—forcing ski resorts to compete harder than ever. Could the economic downturn have an upside for skiing?

Like most skiers, Mitch Holmes is scrutinizing his budget a lot closer these days. The Cape Cod resident would like to take his wife and children on a ski vacation to Colorado, but those plans have been scrapped due to the weak economy. “I’m in commercial real estate, which isn’t exactly hot right now,” he says. Instead, Holmes is skiing more at his home-state hill, Wachusett Mountain.

Ski Reservations Down But Steady

Denver, Colorado, April 17, 2009—Citing the most recent lodging reservation data released by the Mountain Travel Research Program (MTRiP)* through March 31, occupancy for March 2009 was down 21.3 percent and average daily rate was down 16.6 percent compared to March 2008. Season-to-date results show occupancy down 16 percent and average daily lodging rates down nine percent for the overall season. Figures have remained consistent for the past three months and are thought to closely reflect anticipated end-of-season totals due at the end of April.

The Governor of New York State has proposed a budget which contains a sales tax on lift tickets and lessons. Ski Areas of New York, Inc. (SANY), a trade association that represents the ski industry in New York State, opposes this proposed sales tax. SANY wants skiers and riders in New York to know the facts and to provide them with a simple and easy method to contact their state legislators. To that end, SANY launched the new
site stoptheskitax.com in February.


Bretton Woods Raises over $30,000 at Ski-a-Thon

All funds raised by the Ski-A-Thon event are used to provide for equipment purchases for year-round activities, for volunteer training and certification expenses and for adaptive program operating costs.
