Less Fear, More Air

A new oral spray can now keep your pre-drop-in fears at bay.

Next time you’re quivering above the Poubelle Couloir, keep in mind that fear is just a neurochemical overload in your brain. Then open wide for a squirt of Oxytocin Accelerator, an oral spray recently introduced in the U.S. by HBC Protocols.

Scientists in Zurich found that oxytocin—a hormone released during stress and sex—reduces activity in your brain’s fear center. Thus, HBC figures, more oxytocin equals less fear—and therefore bigger air and steeper chutes.

Weekends: Devil's Head, Wisc.

Leave behind the bright lights of Chicago for a weekend and head to the haven that is Devil's Head.

Located on the glacier hewn Baraboo Bluffs that tower over Lake Wisconsin near Merrimac, Devil’s Head Resort has been a haven for Midwest skiers since 1970. The secluded resort draws skiers from all over the region, but it’s a haven that’s particularly luring for Chicago’s skiers, simply because Devil’s Head is everything Chicago isn’t: pristine, serene and relaxing. From the Loop to the slopes is about three hours, a trek thousands navigate every winter.

Mt. Bachelor, OR

Don’t come to this Pacific Northwest sleeper for the shopping or the nightlife. Come for the snow.

It can’t possibly still be snowing. The snowpack can’t possibly be this deep. My luck can’t possibly this good. Then I remember—this is the Cascades, where a 200-inch base by midwinter is average. Luck has nothing to do with it.

2009 Safety Awareness Week at Killington

Killington and the National Ski Areas Association team up for demonstrations, giveaways, and more Jan. 17-23

X Games Hit Aspen, Jan. 22-25

Get out your twin-tips and temporary tattoos: The X Games are hitting Aspen, Colorado again, January 22-25, 2009. This year, skip the snowmobiles for the demolition derby of Skier X (a.k.a. skiercross) – four to six skiers simultaneously careening down a motocross-like course of rollers, bumps, banks, and ridges.

The International Olympic Committee recently announced that the sport will be included in the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler, B.C.

Fitness for Families

The family that sweats together stays—and skis—together. Here’s a fitness routine the whole gang can manage.

You don’t need us to tell you that each member of your family is wired differently. What you might not know is that, despite your differences, each of you—including your can’t-sit-still 9-year-old and your teenage X-Box addict—can tune up for the slopes with the same workout, and enjoy your ski vacation more because of it.
