The season isn't over yet. Several resorts are staying open late into the spring while others offer end-of-season deals.
Temps are rising as summer approaches but many skiers aren’t ready to store their boards yet. Well, you don’t have to. Winter is playing an encore, pounding the western states with fresh powder while several resorts in the Rockies and out East are still powering lifts. Many resorts close this Sunday, April 15 but some are offering discounted or even free lift tickets on their last day. Here’s a list of late season deals and resorts that plan to stay open even later into the spring.
There are a variety of ways to cut a ski trail. Here’s one that’s not highly recommended: a forest fire. One roared through 48,000 acres in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 2007, stopping just short of the ski mountain. The resort helped make sure of that, battling the fire with water guns from its snowmaking system. An unintended upside of the forest fire? The Burn, an out-of-bounds favorite due to its unique charred beauty and killer treeskiing. Duck out near the top of International, rage through the trees, then cut back inbounds and hit the Warm Springs base area.
The lodging is as well-groomed as the slopes at this classic resort.
America’s first destination ski resort (est. 1936) remains one of its finest. But visitors, confronted with its unusual layout, may need guidance finding the perfect place to bed down. Skiers choose from two locales: Sun Valley, a shuttle ride from beginner-friendly Dollar Mountain; the classic resort village experience; and Ketchum, a 19th-century mining town at the foot of Bald Mountain, the main ski area. No ski-in/ski-out lodging, but no worries: Shuttles run between the village, Ketchum and the slopes.
The iconic, four-season destination that is Sun Valley announced that construction for Bald Mountain's Gondola is underway. Originating at the base of River Run and climbing to the Top Terminal Plaza at the Roundhouse, the gondola project will encompass the two terminals, new restrooms and new access to The Roundhouse Restaurant.
